School Closure and Delays

The Soap Lake School District has the following procedures in place regarding school closures or changes to the school day.

Depending on conditions, which could include snow, flooding, power outages, etc. These situations could cause school to:

  • CLOSE FOR THE DAY
  • OPEN 2 HOURS LATE (2 HOUR LATE START)
  • OPEN 3 HOURS LATE (3 HOUR LATE START)
  • CLOSE EARLY

What may cause a school closure?

School closure may occur if conditions are deemed unsafe for normal school operation. These conditions may be power outages, flooding, weather, natural disaster or other unplanned conditions.

What happens when school is delayed for 2 hours?

During a 2-hour delay the school day will operate on a shortened schedule beginning two hours later than normal and will end at the normal time. Breakfast will NOT be served. However, snacks are available for those that may need them. If this was to happen on a Monday there will be no “late start” and the bus and school schedules will operate as if it was a Tuesday through Friday. School bus routes will begin pick up two hours later than the normal scheduled time. This means if your student regularly catches the bus at 7:30 AM they would catch the bus at 9:30 AM. School will end at the regular time.

What happens when school is delayed for 3 hours?

During a 3-hour delay the school day will operate on a shortened schedule beginning three hours later than normal and will end at the normal time. Breakfast will NOT be served. However, snacks are available for those that may need them. If this was to happen on a Monday there will be no “late start” and the bus and school schedules will operate as if it was a Tuesday through Friday. School bus routes will begin pick up three hours later than the normal scheduled time. This means if your student regularly catches the bus at 7:30 AM they would catch the bus at 10:30 AM. School will end at the regular time.

What will happen when school closes early?

If it is determined that we need to close school early the superintendent, administration team, and local officials will decide an appropriate time for release. Release times will differ depending on the severity of the condition(s). Every attempt will be made to communicate with the parents/guardians as early as possible so that plans can be made to care for students.

How will we communicate these potential changes?

Any changes in the school schedule, closer, late start, early release or any other situation will be communicated through the School Messenger system, on the school website and district Facebook page.

School Messenger

  • The automated School Messenger system will call or text you whenever there is a school delay or closure. Please make sure that the district has accurate contact information for you. Please call or email either building to update your information.
